General Insurance Needs

I was having a casual conversation with a friend last night and we touched on the topic of having sufficient coverage.

Right now, he is having financial issues as he needs to pay for a high premium monthly. But as it is an endowment policy, when it matures, it will secure him close to $500K for three policies combined.

So it is a good thing as it can be considered as retirement funds.

So I told him to try his best to persevere. It is all for the good of his future retirement needs. This is important as he is well, gay, and won't be having a "family" when he gets old and whatever he has when he is old, will be useful to care for his needs.

So, to all my readers, never belittle the need for retirement funds and hence, if you are able to afford, do go for some life insurance plans that will pay out when it matures.

Again, if you need further coverage, approach your current agent for further analysis of your needs. The premium is lower if you start young and can help you cover any illness that comes after your coverage. Whatever illness you have after increasing your coverage or any rider, cannot be considered in the insurance.

Cheers

Tips to Help You Save on Car Insurance

People complain about the cost of their auto insurance which is hardly surprising, given that a typical policy costs at least a few hundred dollars a year. Depending on your age, driving record, and other factors, your annual premium can be significantly more than that.

So how can you lower your premium and save yourself some money ?

If you own a car and drive it, going without car insurance is generally not an option. In most states, you are required by law to purchase a minimum amount of liability coverage. And you should probably have more than just the bare minimum if you want to provide yourself with adequate protection. There are steps you can take, however, to reduce your auto insurance costs without having to cancel your policy. Some or all of these steps may be appropriate for you, depending on your circumstances.

Some tips to save money on auto insurance include the following (not exhaustive) :

1. Shop around
One of your first steps should be to shop around. A particularly good time to investigate your alternatives is when your current policy is about to be up for renewal, especially if you find that your premium has gone up. You may be surprised to learn that auto insurance premiums for the exact same coverage on the same car can vary widely (by hundreds of dollars) between different insurers, even in states that regulate car insurance rates.

2. Keep an eye on your credit report
Your credit history is an important factor for most auto insurance companies. Many studies have shown a correlation between your credit history and the risk to an insurance company. Paying your bills on time and maintaining a good credit history will allow you to enjoy lower auto insurance rates.

3. Move
If you live in a rural community with little crime and traffic congestion, your premium will generally be lower than if you live in an urban area where your car is more likely to be stolen, vandalized, or involved in an accident.

Granted, you shouldn't move just to cut your auto insurance costs. However, this may be one of many factors in your decision if you're thinking about relocating from the country to the city.

4. Increase your deductible
For many people, raising the deductible on their car insurance is a good way to cut the cost of the policy. Sometimes you can reduce your annual premium by 10 percent or more if you increase your deductible from, say, $250 to $500. If you do this, however, make sure you have the financial resources to handle the larger deductible when the time comes.

5. Drive less
If you drive less than a certain number of miles in a year (e.g., 7,500), you may qualify for a low-mileage discount. If your insurer offers this discount, try to limit your driving as much as possible. If you commute to work, use public transportation instead of driving. When you go away on vacation, fly or take the train.

6. Drive more safely
You may be eligible for a price break on your policy if you maintain a clean driving record for a specified period (usually three years). A clean driving record generally means no accidents, moving violations, drunk driving convictions, etc., during that period. The best way to qualify for the applicable discount is to drive carefully and defensively at all times.

7. Don't use your car for business purposes
Since work-related driving generally subjects you to higher premiums than pleasure driving, it may be in your best interest to stop using your car for business purposes.

8. Inquire about multifamily/multipolicy discounts.
You may receive a discount from your insurance company if you buy more than one type of insurance through that same company (e.g., auto and homeowner's). A discount may also apply to your auto insurance if you insure multiple cars under the same policy or with the same company.

9. Buy a low-profile car.
Cars are rated on a risk scale for auto insurance purposes. In general, sports cars and other high-performance, flashy vehicles are classified as higher risks because they are common targets for thieves and vandals, and because statistically, the people who own them tend to drive more recklessly. If you own such a vehicle, you will likely pay a higher premium than if you owned a station wagon, sedan, or other low-risk vehicle.

10. Keep your car in a garage
Cars parked in garages are less likely to be stolen, vandalized, or struck by other vehicles. Using a garage to store your car may entitle you to a slight premium reduction on your car insurance.

11. Have safety/anti-theft devices installed.
You may receive discounts on your insurance if your car is equipped with one or more of the following options: anti-lock brakes, automatic seat belts, and airbags. Similarly, anti-theft devices such as car alarms and tracking systems (e.g., Lojack) may also get you a discount because they reduce the chances of your car being stolen or vandalized.

12. Other discounts
Other discounts may be available if you meet certain criteria. Examples may include discounts for taking a defensive driving course, being a AAA member or staying with the same auto insurance company for a number of years. These discounts vary by company.

I hope this helps !

Insurance Premiums

I met up with my insurance agent today to add on a rider for my policy.

Gosh, cost me a bomb to add something I never considered previously.

Not too happy with it but I had no choice as I needed that coverage.

So, people, if you can, try to make your plans comprehensive as the older you get, the higher your premiums will be.

Some Auto Insurance Tips Revisited

Some auto insurance tips revisited :

Tips For Keeping Auto Insurance Rates Low

Start by keeping a clean driving record. If you get a speeding ticket try to keep it off your record with a driver safety course, for example.

Sometimes your insurance company will give you 10% off if you show recent completion of a driver safety course.

Auto Gap Insurance

If the value of your car is less than the loan you took to get it, then you need auto gap insurance. Auto gap insurance is designed to cover that gap. That's because traditional insurance will only pay for the actual value of your vehicle, and not the price you paid. Traditional insurance pays market value which tends to be lower than the price you paid because automobiles tend to depreciate in value as time goes along.

Car Insurance Coverage

Car Insurance Coverage has several different levels from basic liability to comprehensive. Liability just pays the other person and doesn't cover you at all. So if you accidentally back into a fire hydrant, liability coverage will not pay for you. Also, if you end up hit by an uninsured driver, liability still may not pay for that. If you want coverage for these situations, you need to ask for it. It's a good idea to get coverage for uninsured drivers and to get coverage for personal injuries especially if you do not have health insurance.

Affordable Auto Insurance

Be careful when purchasing products touted as affordable car insurance. What is considered to be affordable car insurance can quickly become not so affordable when the insurer decides to deny you claim. That's why it's best to shop with an independent agent. That agent can advise you on his experience with car insurance companies and which ones to trust and which ones give trouble reimbursing claims.

Making Insurance Comparisons

If you want to make auto insurance comparisons, you must first decide the important areas of auto insurance that you want to compare. Different folks will have different areas that are important to them in auto insurance. Some are looking to find the lowest cost while others are looking for the best coverage. Still others will be looking for the little extras that make a policy their best choice. And, you will also find people that want a local agent that they can call in case of an accident or changes to the policy.

Once you decide what is most important to you, you are ready to make the relevant comparisons.

Knowing About Your Medicare Plan

I was going through Yahoo and found this very enlightening article that I want to share with all my readers. It is about Medicare.

Medicare is the nation's largest health insurance program, covering over 40 million Americans. As long as you've contributed enough to the program (through FICA taxes), you'll be eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, regardless of whether you're retired or not. The best time to apply for Medicare is at the first opportunity to do so : the seven-month period that starts three months before your 65th birthday. The program is divided into two components: Part A and Part B.

Part A is called hospital insurance and covers most of the costs of a stay in the hospital, as well as some follow-up costs after time in the hospital. Part A pays some other outpatient medical services, including medically necessary equipment and supplies, home health care, and physical therapy. Under most circumstances, you do not have to pay a premium for Part A.

Part B is medical insurance. This optional coverage is intended to help pay doctor's bills for treatment in or out of the hospital. It also covers many other medical expenses you incur when you are not in the hospital, such as the costs of necessary medical equipment and tests. If you elect Part B, the monthly premium is automatically deducted from your Social Security check. But there are some out-of-pocket expenses that Medicare will not pay for, including prescription drugs, although a Bush Administration proposal to incorporate a prescription drug benefit into the program is under consideration in Congress.

You now have three options for Medicare Part B coverage: the Original Medicare Plan, a Medicare Managed Care Plan (like an HMO), and the Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plan. Each of these programs has pros and cons. And some may not be available in certain geographical areas. With the Original Medicare Plan, you pay your Part B monthly premium and then pay for additional services as you use them. Medicare Managed Care and Private Fee-for-Service plans are offered by private insurance companies. These programs were initiated to give Medicare recipients more choice in their coverage. With these plans, you must continue to pay your Part B premiums, and you may also have to pay an additional premium to the insurance company as well as any related deductible or co-insurance payments. However, the services you receive may be more comprehensive than those offered through the Original Medicare Plan.

If you opt for the Original Medicare Plan, you might also be interested in securing Medicare Supplement Insurance, or "Medigap" insurance. The term Medigap comes from the notion that these insurance policies will cover the gaps in Medicare payments. Medigap doesn't fill in all the gaps -- but it helps. Before you buy a Medigap insurance policy, consider not only the services covered but also the amount of benefits and the monthly cost of the policy. Also pay attention to how much premiums may rise in years to come. You might also want to compare Medigap with the Medicare Managed Care and private fee-for-service programs, if they are offered in your area.

Pay Less for Auto Insurance if you Drive Less

If you have a car that spends most of its time parked in a garage, a couple of insurers have a deal for you : auto-insurance rates based on how much you drive, among other factors that suggest you present a lower risk on the roads. Read on this article extracted from Yahoo Finance and Wall Street Journal.

The thinking behind the mileage-based discounts offered by Progressive Corp. and GMAC Insurance is that people who rarely drive are less likely to get into accidents and thus are profitable customers even if insurers offer a big discount.

Insurers have long sought reliable mileage data for drivers, but the figures drivers report are notoriously unreliable, while technology-based solutions have proved complicated to implement. GMAC Insurance and Progressive are offering mileage discounts using onboard devices to measure miles, and in the case of Progressive, other driving habits.

Both pay-as-you-go plans offer drivers a chance to benefit from their minimalist driving habits while giving insurers a chance to price more accurately for the risk they take. While consumer advocates call it a generally benign arrangement, they suggest that, before signing up, drivers make sure they understand and feel comfortable with the information insurers are collecting.

The discount offered by GMAC Insurance, the 20th-largest property and casualty insurer in the U.S. by premiums written, is based on a partnership with General Motors Corp. subsidiary OnStar. It offers drivers discounts based on how many miles they drive, ranging from 54% off for those who drive less than 2,500 miles a year to a 14% discount for drivers who clock less than 15,000 miles annually.

To get the discount, which is available in 34 states, drivers must own a car manufactured by GM, GMAC's former parent, that is equipped with OnStar, a safety and navigation system installed in most new GM cars. The drivers must agree to have OnStar supply their insurer with a monthly odometer reading on which to base the discount.

Progressive's TripSense, available in Minnesota, Michigan and Oregon, requires customers to install a small device into their car's onboard diagnostic port, and then download the information to their home computer and send it off to Progressive at regular intervals. Progressive's discount for the program ranges from 5% to 25% and there may be a revised model.

When deciding to take on a health insurance, it is advisable to make a detailed scrutiny of the benefits that are promised and to tabulate the your rights as the person opting in for the insurance.

Also, the health insurance company should not strive to severely limit coverage if the person is working in a private healthcare provider, which falls out of this network.

Is the amount paid to deductible too high or is the money paid for co-insurance higher? There are certain institutions that have recently gone online, which assist the users to find out the health insurance providers.

Auto Insurance Basics

There is no such thing as a free lunch or a cheap premium. There is always a way to get a better deals on auto insurance and here we take a look at just that – how to get a good deal, in fact the best possible deal that will keep down your car insurance bill.

Auto Insurance Basics
With all the economical difficulties surrounding as at the moment, it’s essential for absolutely everyone to protect their most valuable assets and cars are definitely among them. There shouldn’t be any need to stress the importance of having auto insurance considering all the possible scenarios that result in damages, both on and off the road. In fact, having car insurance is required by state law in absolutely every US state.

In essence, the driver pays the auto insurance company a certain sum of money called "a premium" for the financial protection that he gets in the case of an accident or an act of God. In either case, the owner of the vehicle has to just file a claim with the insurance company which pays out in fullest the costs for fixing the damages done.

Typically, auto insurance provides two basic types of coverage - collision and liability. Collision coverage is paid in the case of a car accident, theft, damage on the windshield while driving and similar scenarios that fall in the so called "acts of God" category.

Liability is the type of coverage that protects you against property and personal damage (Personal Injury Protection) that you might commit to others as a result of a mishap on the road and you are the cause for it. So when signing the contract, you have to check which types of insurance are covered, what’s included and what not.

My Own Reminder On My own Endowment Policies

Need to call up Winston (my insurance agent working for Prudential) for a review on my existing Prucash, Prusave endowment plans.

I need to do some top ups here and there for my insurance policies.

A couple of riders on hospitalisation benefits and other critical illness covers should be added on now that I can afford it.

The older I get, the more expensive add-ons will be.

Heck, my claim for my last hospitalisation was sooo bad, it is peanuts.

Finding an Excellent Car Insurance at a Great Rate

All of us want insurance for our vehicles, not only because it is safe, but it protects from various liabilities. Not only do we want insurance, but it seems to be a life essential, protecting us from losing transportation due to a car accident or any other type of damage. Auto insurance also serves to protect us from loss due to criminal activity, very handy for some of us living in high crime areas. The issue isn’t what we need in this case; it is where to get it without a massive monthly bill. Getting a great rate for car insurance these days depends on various factors, including the area you live in, your age, and greatly upon the company you choose.

In order to get a car insurance quote, you must have a vehicle. There are a couple ways to actually purchase auto insurance such as via telephone, internet, or in-office. The method you choose usually does have a bit of an effect on the price. In-office insurance rates usually are more accurate as the car can actually be inspected, but the internet seems to offer the largest discount.

Telephone purchases can be either way, offering the same rates as in-office or online. Which option should you choose? Well, preferably the most convenient and cost-effective option. You generally can search online and compare quotes amongst several providers, giving you the ability to find the cheapest rate overall.

What should you do first? Gather all you information, including identification and your vehicle paperwork in order to either input into the computer or provide to the office car insurance agent. The actual rate you will get will depend on the value of the vehicle and how much of a liability the vehicle could be. Having anti-theft equipment is a really great way to lessen your auto insurance rate. You should also opt for less customization and addition of expensive equipment such as audio and visual equipment. Keeping the vehicle to a minimum will look like less of a financial risk to the insurance company.

We all love these flashy cars, but they can have a serious effect on the insurance rate we receive for our vehicle. The higher in market value your car is, the more you will inevitably pay to the auto insurance company each month or annually, whichever method you choose. The more safety equipment that is installed or implemented within the vehicle also serves to decrease the insurance rate.

As the vehicle can weigh in heavy on your insurance rates, there is no larger factor than yourself. If you have a high accident rate, are currently on SR-22, are under the age of 25, have a large amount of tickets annually, commonly default on payments, etc. you will generally have a much higher car insurance premium for your car, no matter what type of car you have. SR-22 can actually double insurance rates and those under 25 can actually pay very large premiums for insurance on their cars. Getting the best rate should comprise of safe and careful, law-abiding driving to keep rates from sky rocketing.

Is Your Car Insurance so Expensive ?

Although these days it is easy to arrange your car insurance online, comparing quotes at the click of a button and paying by credit card for instant cover, one ever present difficulty still remains : the high cost of insurance policies.

The fact that having auto insurance in place is both a legal requirement and a sensible idea doesn't detract from the annoyance of having to pay what seems to be an expensive sum, and most of us would jump at the chance of reducing the bill.

To do this we need to know what factors insurance companies use when deciding how much our premiums will be.

Perhaps the most important influence on the level of your premium is your driving history. If you have a history of accidents, then naturally you're a higher risk to the insurer and so they'll charge you more. Worse, if you've ever been convicted of a motoring offence such as speeding or driving while under the influence, then your insurance will cost you even more .

On the upside, a history containing no bad records such as accidents will result in cheaper auto insurance as you build up a 'no claims' discount over the years.

The next most important factor is what kind of car you're trying to insure. Naturally, more expensive cars will cost more to replace, and hence the car insurance will naturally cost you more too. This isn't the whole story though, as other features such as engine size, the availability of cheap spares, and the difficulty of repair will have an influence too. Finally, some models of car are well known for being easier to break into or steal than others - car insurance companies are well aware of this and will adjust their quotes accordingly.

How you use your car will also affect the price you pay for cover. If you hardly drive and have a low annual mileage, then your premiums can be cut as you're on the road for less time, and therefore have less chance of needing to make a claim. City drivers may also have to pay more compared to those who drive in quieter areas.

Where you keep your vehicle is important too - if you have a secure parking area, preferably one that keeps your vehicle out of sight and under cover, then your risk is lowered, as will be your insurance premiums. Cars that are regularly parked at the roadside are at a higher risk of being stolen or involved in collisions, and so will be more expensive to insure.

One final point to cover is that of how attractive your car is to thieves, and not just in the obvious way of how desirable your vehicle is! An expensive car with a good security system including an alarm and window etching etcetera will be more of a hassle for criminals to profit from, and so is less likely to be stolen than a cheaper car with little or no security. Also, a car featuring plenty of gadgets such as an expensive audio system or satellite navigation will attract greater interest from potential thieves.

I have gotten my new car insurance up :) after switching over to a newer and cheaper company :)

IMO, as long as the terms are good, and meets my requirements and AT a lower cost, I will just do the switch.

Another year without having to worry about my auto insurance since I have paid for the entire year.

Time to celebrate the festive CNY season ! I hope this year will be good !

Happy holidays to all the Chinese people worldwide and my readers :)

Accident On the Expressway

I was heading back from work today.

Saw a 2 car collision accident on the expressway. Which caused a traffic jam and I ended reaching home later than usual by an hour.

Looking back at the incident, made me feel relieved that I bought my auto insurance as well as medical coverage to safeguard myself over such mishaps.

At least both coverage will be able to provide something for me and/or my family should something really bad happen.

Never take things in life for granted. Safeguard it with adequate insurance, be it health or endowment and make sure you have sufficient auto insurance coverage.

Disability Income Insurance Revisited

If you simply cannot physically or mentally do your job, you will leave, either on your own or by your employer's action. It won't take long for the bills to mount up. Soon, discretionary spending (clothing, dining out etc) will end, too. Eventually, there is no savings for retirement, vacations...... No relative or friend will carry you for more than a month or two.

You have to rely upon yourself for your own salvation.

The reality is that nothing but disability insurance can replace your income. When you pay the premium, the benefit is tax-free. If you are a young professional, you can also add a rider that lets you optionally buy more disability income coverage as your income rises, even if your health changes !

Best disability income policies are from Guardian, and also very good are Union Central, MassMutual, MetLife, and Principal. If your agent is merely filling in your occupation on the application form, he/she is being lazy. Write out what you do, now, in detail, while you are healthy, so you are not trying to define your occupation with a fussy disability income insurance claim analyst when you are disabled.

Do, however, take some time to look at the exclusions on the policy. There are several companies that have several pages of exclusions that would allow them not to pay the disability income insurance benefit. Hence, I recommend Guardian because they seem to have the least amount of exclusions.

To conclude, even if you never buy life insurance and scrimp on your auto insurance and homeowners, never scrimp on disability income insurance. You can always make it all back, as long as you still can work, but if you can't...well, that is why disability income insurance is a necessity.

Auto / Car Insurance Checklist 2010

Looking for a comprehensive auto insurance in the brand new year of 2010 ? Below is a list that you may find useful when hunting for a good car insurance deal.

The price you pay for your car insurance varies depending on your driving record, the type of car you have and the insurance company you buy your auto insurance policy from.

Here is a list of things you may like to do to save you some money.

Look Around and Request for Car Insurance Quotes

Get at least three auto insurance quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet.

Get quotes from different types of insurance companies. Some sell through their own agents whilst others sell through independent agents who offer policies from several insurance companies. Other companies, on the hand, sell directly to consumers over the phone or via the Internet. The price varies depending on the sales method used.

However, do not shop by price alone. You want a reputable company that answers your questions and handles car insurance claims fairly and efficiently, and is reliable.

Sources for finding the right kind of company include : word of mouth from family, friends and associates, as well as your state insurance department, where you can find consumer complaint ratios by company.

You can also check the financial health of car insurance companies through independent rating companies.

Compare Auto Insurance Costs Before You Purchase a Vehicle

Your insurance premium is based in part on the vehicle's listed price, the cost to repair it, its overall safety record and the likelihood of theft.

Many insurers offer discounts for features that reduce the risk of injuries or theft, such as air bags, daytime running lights, anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes etc.

Note that expensive cars that are favourite targets for thieves cost more to insure.

Ask for a Higher Deductable

Your deductible is the amount of money you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance policy kicks in. By requesting higher deductibles, you can lower your costs substantially.

For example, increasing your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce your collision and comprehensive coverage premium by 15 to 30 percent. Going to a $1,000 deductible can save you 40 percent or more.

However, keep in mind that you'll need to have the amount of the deductible on hand should something happen to your vehicle.

Buy your Auto and Homeowners Insurance Coverage from the Same Insurer

Many insurers will give you a discount if you buy two or more types of insurance from them.

Also, you may get a reduction if you have more than one vehicle insured with the same company. Some insurers reduce insurance premiums for long-time customers.

However, do your maths and shop around carefully; you may still be able to save more money buying from a different insurance company even with the multi-policy discount.

Reduce Auto Insurance Coverage in Older Cars

Consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars.

It may not be cost-effective to continue insuring cars worth less than 10 times the amount you would pay for coverage. Any car insurance claim payment you receive would not substantially exceed your premiums minus the deductible. Claims occur on average only once every 11 or 12 years.

Auto insurance dealers and banks can tell you the worth of a car, or you can look it up online at Kelley Blue Book.

Ask about Group Insurance when looking for Car Insurance Policies

You may be eligible to get insurance through a group plan from your employer, or through professional, business and alumni groups or other associations. Group plans often provide substantial discounts on insurance.

Ask your employer, or any groups or clubs of which you are a member, about this option.

Maintain Good Credit May Lower Your Car Insurance Premium

Your credit rating may affect what you pay for insurance, so monitor it carefully.

You can get this information directly from the three major credit-rating agencies (Trans Union, Equifax and Experian). There are also various Web sites that allow you to check your credit rating and provide tips on how to improve your score.

Low-Mileage Discounts On Your Auto Insurance

Some companies offer discounts to motorists who drive a lower than average number of miles per year.

Low mileage discounts can also apply to drivers who car-pool to work.

Seek out Safe Driver Discounts when Applying for Car Insurance

Most insurance companies offer discounts to policyholders who have not had any accidents or moving violations for a number of years.

You may also qualify for a cut if you have recently taken a defensive driving course, if you are over 50 and retired, or if there is a young driver on the policy who is a good student, has taken a drivers education course or is away at a college, generally at least 100 miles away.

When you comparison shop, be sure to inquire about discounts for the following (availability will vary according to the state and company) :

  • No accidents in 3 years
  • No moving violations in 3 years
  • Defensive driving course
  • Student drivers with good grades
  • College students away from home
  • $500 deductible
  • $1,000 deductible
  • Daytime running lights
  • Low annual mileage
  • Drivers over 50 to 55 years of age
  • Driver training course
  • Anti-theft device
  • Air bags
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • More than one car insured with the same company
  • Auto and homeowners coverage with the same company
  • Long-time customer with insurance company

But don't forget that the key to savings is not the discounts but the final price. A company that offers few discounts may still have a lower overall price. Getting a car insurance is compulsory before you can drive on the road. Do your maths carefully and work out the best and most affordable auto insurance plan that suits your needs.

What is Covered in a Basic Car Insurance Policy ?

Been busy lately so hardly had time to post anything. This post is an extension of an earlier post on car insurance policy coverage : Types of Auto Insurance Coverage.

There are basically 6 types of car insurance coverage :

Bodily Injury Liability

This coverage applies to injuries that you, the designated driver or the policyholder, cause to someone else. You and family members listed on the policy are also covered when driving someone else’s car with their permission.

It’s very important to have enough liability insurance, because if you are involved in a serious accident, you may be sued for a large sum of money. Do consider purchasing an auto insurance policy that is more than the state-required minimum to protect assets such as your home and savings.

Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This coverage pays for the treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's vehicle. At its broadest, PIP can cover medical payments, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident. It may also cover funeral costs.

Property Damage Liability

This car insurance coverage pays for damage that you (or someone driving the car with your permission) may cause to someone else's property. Usually, this means damage to someone else’s car, but it also includes damage to lamp posts, fences, buildings or other structural property that your car hit.

Collision

This coverage pays for damage to your car resulting from a collision with another car, object or as a result of flipping over.

It also covers damage caused by potholes. Collision coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000, and the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. Even if you are at fault for the accident, your collision coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible. If you're not at fault, your auto insurance company may try to recover the amount they paid you from the other driver’s car insurance company.

If auto insurance company is successful in recovering the amount, you'll also be reimbursed for the deductible as well.

Comprehensive

This car insurance coverage reimburses you for loss due to theft or damage caused by something other than a collision with another car or object, such as falling objects, fire, missiles, explosion, earthquake, vandalism, windstorm, hail, flood, riot, or contact with animals such as birds etc.

Comprehensive auto insurance is usually sold with a $100 to $300 deductible, though you may want to opt for a higher deductible as a way of lowering your premium.

Comprehensive car insurance will also reimburse you if your windshield is cracked or shattered. Some companies offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This coverage will reimburse you, a member of your family, or a designated driver if one of you is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.

Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play when an at-fault driver has insufficient auto insurance to pay for your total loss. This coverage will also protect you if you are hit as a pedestrian.

Check out which car insurance policy suits you the best and your budget and be equipped with one that suits your lifestyle.
